Surat building collapse: 1 dead, 15 injured; rescue ops on as several feared trapped
Surat: At least one person has been killed in the building collapse incident on Saturday at Sachin Pali village in Gujarat's Surat amid several days of incessant rains, media reported.
According to media reports, 15 people have been injured in the collapse and several are feared trapped under the debris of the building.
According to an NDTV report, a woman was pulled out alive from under the heaps of rubble.
The building housed 30 apartments, of which five were inhabited.
Horrifying visuals from the scene showed the remnants of the building, constructed only eight years ago, with large concrete slabs piled in a heap of debris.
The building collapsed this afternoon with five families inside, raising concerns about several individuals being trapped in the rubble.
Police and fire department officials quickly responded to the scene, initiating rescue operations. Images depicted rescue workers moving through the wreckage in search of survivors.
By late evening, they recovered a body.
A team from the National Disaster Response Force has been called in to assist with the rescue efforts.
Officials reported that, despite its relatively recent construction, the building was in poor condition and most of the flats were unoccupied.
