Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday visited Kuwait when he met Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah and thanked him for his guidance and insights on taking ties between the two nations to a higher level.

Following his meeting, Jaishankar wrote on X: "Honoured to call on His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of the State of Kuwait. Conveyed the greetings of President and Prime Minister."

"India and Kuwait share centuries-old bonds of goodwill and friendship. Our contemporary partnership is expanding steadily," he said.

Jaishankar said: "Thank him for his guidance and insights on taking our ties to a higher level."

During his visit to the Middle East nation, Jaishankar also discussed ways to increase economic cooperation when he met PM Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Jaishankar said he had a 'productive meeting' with  Kuwaiti FM Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya.

"Took stock of our broad-based partnership covering political, trade, investment, health, education, people-to-people and connectivity. And exchanged views on the geopolitical developments in the region," he said.

India and Kuwait enjoy traditionally friendly relations, which are rooted in history and have stood the test of time.

India has been a natural trading partner of Kuwait and until 1961, Indian Rupee was a legal tender in Kuwait.

Till the discovery and development of oil, Kuwait’s economy revolved around its fine harbour and maritime activities which included ship building, pearl diving, fishing and voyages to India on wooden dhows carrying dates, Arabian horses and pearls that were traded for wood, cereals, clothes and spices, read the Indian Embassy in Kuwait website.

The year 2021-22 marked 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between two countries.
