RG Kar: Haven't seen a case like this in 30 years, Bengal not following criminal procedure code, says Supreme Court

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Thursday said the West Bengal government is not following the criminal procedure code while hearing on the case pertaining to the brutal rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's major state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In its observation, the top court said, "I have not come across a case like this in my last 30 years, Bengal not following criminal procedure code."

The court said this as it questioned the timeline of the case and lashed out at the state police for filing a UD (Unnatural Death) case even after the autopsy report.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra resumed hearing on the case that has sent shockwaves across the nation and questioned women's safety at work places.

The Supreme Court on Thursday urged the junior doctors, who are protesting across West Bengal demanding justice for the 31-year-old post-graduate medical student's brutal rape and murder, to resume their duties, media reports said.

"Poor people cannot be left in lurch," said Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud to prevent the cripping of the medical facilities.

The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is located in North Kolkata's Belgachia area.

One person, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case but protesting students as well as the victim's parents suspect more people are involved in the case.
