RG Kar rape-murder: Supreme Court asks protesters to resume work, bars Mamata govt from stopping peaceful protests

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the junior doctors, who are protesting against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor, to resume work ensuring no coercive action will be allowed to be taken against them, media reports said.

The top court has also asked the West Bengal government, which is at the receiving end of a massive public anger, to not stop any peaceful protest over the rape-murder that has sent shockwaves across the country and also brought the state administration under scanner over its alleged cover-up.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra resumed hearing on the case that was taken by the top court on Tuesday.

The next hearing will be held on September 5.

Why was the crime scene not secured? Supreme Court asks Bengal govt

In a tough question for the Bengal government, which is represented by advocate Kapil Sibal, the court also asked why a post-mortem was conducted before a First Information Report.

The state administration has been asked why a FIR was filed on "Unnatural Death" even when the autopsy report claims rape and murder.

In its observation, the top court said, "I have not come across a case like this in my last 30 years, Bengal not following criminal procedure code."

The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is located in North Kolkata's Belgachia area.

One person, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case but protesting students as well as the victim's parents suspect more people are involved in the case.

'Haven't seen a case like this in 30 years'

In its observation, the top court said, "I have not come across a case like this in my last 30 years, Bengal not following criminal procedure code."

The court said this as it questioned the timeline of the case and lashed out at the state police for filing a UD (Unnatural Death) case even after the autopsy report.
