Bolpur/IBNS: Amid the massive outrage and nationwide protest over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, it has come to light that a married woman was raped and sexually assaulted at gunpoint in Bengal's Bolpur, Anandabazar Patrika reported.

According to the victim's family, the incident happened three days ago. The victim, who was traumatised by the incident, tried to commit suicide by popping sleeping pills, ABP reported.

After getting discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, she went straight to the police station to lodge a complaint.

Within a few hours, the police were able to arrest the accused, Feroz, who is an active Trinamool Congress worker in the area. However, the local TMC refused to accept that the accused was a party worker

The victim lived with her husband and two children. However, owing to his work, the husband mostly stayed outstation.

As per the victim's family, the accused took advantage of her husband's absence at home and often harassed her.

Three days ago when the victim had gone out to fetch water, she was taken to a nearby barn and raped at gunpoint, the family told ABP newspaper.

According to the FIR, the victims, hands and legs were tied and the accused even inserted the gun in her private parts. He reportedly took pictures of the gruesome episode and threatened to spread the same on social media.

The victim also accused that Feroz tried to kill her 4-year-old son with a sack, who was also present at the crime scene.

When she went to the hospital to get treatment following the assault, Feroz fled the area. On return from the hospital initially, she tried to commit suicide out of shame and fear. However, her neighbours took her to a hospital.

Feroz was arrested from a neighbouring village, according to the police.

"Since I did not accept Feroz's ill proposals, he raped me at gunpoint. I want extreme punishment for him," the victim was quoted as saying by ABP newspaper.

His husband echoed the same and said, "Feroz took advantage of my absence from home most of the time."

Feroz, however, denied all allegations and called them lies.

Police said action will be taken no matter who is involved in the crime. they have registered an FIR on several sections of the IPC including rape and assault.
