Calcutta HC grants bail to DYFI leader Kalatan Dasgupta in junior doctor audio clip case

Kolkata/IBNS: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted bail to Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leader Kalatan Dasgupta, who was arrested over an audio clip, brought to the fore by Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh alleging a conspiracy to attack the junior doctors protesting against the ruling regime and the police over the RG Kar rape and murder.

After a long hearing during the day, a bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj granted bail to the youth leader on a personal bond of Rs. 500.

According to the bail order, Kalatan cannot be arrested in connection with the case without the permission of the court.

The court also reprimanded Bidhannagar Police and asked them about the source of the audio clip.

The bail is a blow to the Trinamool Congress government in the audio-clip case amid allegations that they are trying to defame the opposition forces in the RG Kar protest movement.

The judge also asked how a politician (Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh) could circulate the audio clip to the media before police took action against Kalatan.

The audio clip, which was not been verified by IBNS independently, captured a purported conversation between two people allegedly planning an attack on thousands of junior doctors, who are camped outside the state Health and Family Welfare office Swasthya Bhavan in the Salt Lake area demanding justice for the RG Kar rape-murder case.

The viral audio referred to two people whose names start with the letters S' and 'A' respectively.

One person- named Sanjib Das- was arrested last Friday. Kalatan, who has been accused of being the person in the conversation, was arrested by the Bidhannagar Police on Saturday.

Reacting to his arrest, Kalatan had told the media, "It is a tactic to divert people's attention from the movement demanding justice for the RG Kar incident."

Meanwhile, the agitating junior doctors Thursday announced to call off their strike Friday after 41 days of protest over the gruesome rape and murder of a PGT in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and announced that the medics would "partially" return to work from Saturday, especially at the essential services department given the flood situation in Bengal.

However, the doctors said they will continue their protests unless justice is delivered in the RG Kar rape and murder case.

The junior doctors also announced a massive rally to be held from Swasthya Bhawan to the CGO Complex, where the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) operates, at 3 PM on Friday.
