Uzbekistan to hold early Presidential elections on July 9

| @indiablooms | 14 Jun 2023, 07:15 pm

This year is passing in the history of Uzbekistan as a period of democratic renewal and change.

The renewed Constitution adopted for the first time at the referendum held on April 30 laid the political and legal foundations for implementing the new Development Strategy of Uzbekistan, defining the priorities for further strengthening of the state and society at a historically important stage in developing national statehood.

Citizens of Uzbekistan actively participated in this process with their feedback and suggestions to strengthen their confidence in the future. This is most clearly evidenced by the fact that at the Constitutional referendum on adopting the Constitution in a new edition, 90.21 percent of the citizens voted “yes”.

It can be said with confidence that the commitment of today’s multinational people to the development of the country is a clear example of reforms such as freedom of speech and openness that have been implemented in society in recent years. The full implementation of the new norms defined in the adopted Constitution requires the continuation of reforms with renewed power and enthusiasm.

Therefore, on May 8, the President of Uzbekistan  Shavkat Mirziyoyev  , at the meeting with the leaders of the chambers of the Oliy Majlis (parliament), political parties, judicial and executive bodies, and social activists, put forward an initiative to hold snap presidential elections, even though the legislation provide the opportunity to continue the current powers of the President until 2026, taking into account the fact that it is necessary to radically reform all levels of power through the innovations specified in the Basic Law, and also because the President, the government, ministers, khokims(governors of the regions) set urgent new political, social and economic tasks.

According to the Decree of the President of Uzbekistan “On the appointment of advance polling of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan”, it is defined that the snap election of the President of Uzbekistan will be held on July 9, 2023.

ThePresidential election campaign in Uzbekistan startedon May 10.

The Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan considered the issue of admitting political parties to participate in the Presidential elections.

– The People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, the Social Democratic Party of Uzbekistan “Adolat”, the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan, the Democratic Party Uzbekistan “MilliyTiklanish” submitted documents with a request for admission to participating in the snap Presidential elections, – said BakhromKuchkarov,Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission. – In accordance with the electoral legislation, the Central Election Commission reviewed the documents, after which these parties were allowed to participate in the early elections of the President of Uzbekistan.
