1984 anti-Sikh riots :Supreme Court orders constitution of SIT to re-examine 186 cases

New Delhi,, Jan 10 (IBNS) : The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to relook into 186 cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots following Indira Gandhi's assassination, reports said.

The three-member SIT will be headed by a retired High Court judge and include one serving and one retired IPS officer. It will examine whether any of these cases need to be reopened.

The apex court's action follows a report by a supervisory committee of retired justices KPS Radharishnan and JM Panchal  stating that  out of the 293 cases related to  anti-Sikh riots, 186 were closed by the original SIT without investigation.

In September last year, the Supreme Court had set up the Radharishnan-Panchal panel to examine the decision of the original SIT to close 199 cases.

The anti-Sikh riots had erupted in different parts of the country following Indira Gandhi's assassination by her security guards in the wake of the army operation in the Amritsar Golden Temple to flush out terrorists. The pogrom claimed at least 3,000 lives across the country.
