21 die in two incidents of hooch tragedy in Bihar
Patna/UNI: Death toll due to hooch tragedy increased to 21 on Thursday with reports of eight deaths in West Champaran district while 13 people had earlier lost their lives in Gopalganj district in Bihar.
As per reports reaching here from Bettiah, eight people died after consuming spurious liquor last night at Chamartoli locality in Telhua village under Nautan police station area of West Champaran district .
All those who died had consumed liquor at Chamartoli locality in Telhua village, said a local resident.
"All those who had consumed liquor last night, had started complaining about uneasiness after returning to their homes," said the villagers and added that some of them died while being rushed to hospital and others died during treatment.
Officials of the district administration were tight-lipped about the incident and maintained that the exact reason behind the deaths could be ascertained only after thorough investigation and receipt of a postmortem report.
In another major tragedy, at least thirteen people died after consuming spurious liquor in Mahmadpur village under Mahmadpur police station area in Gopalganj.
The district administration as of now has confirmed only 9 deaths under mysterious circumstances, however the villages informed that 13 people died after consuming spurious liquor.
With 5 more casualties, the death toll in the hooch tragedy increased to 13 on Thursday whereas 8 people had lost their lives on Wednesday.
Police Superintendent Anand Kumar on Thursday said that the incident related to mysterious deaths of the people was being investigated.
The bodies had been sent for postmortem and the samples had been sent for examination in a forensic science lab, he added.
Reason behind the death could be ascertained only after getting the reports, he further said and informed that four people had been taken into custody who were being interrogated.
