Srinagar, June 30 (IBNS): An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit the Kashmir valley on Tuesday, officials said.

"A moderate intensity earthquake occurred at 3.40am early this morning," an official with the Indian Meteorological Department said in a media statement.

According to the statement, the epicentre of the earthquake was in the Hindukush mountain range of Afghanistan at latitude 36.6 degrees north and longitude 71.4 degrees east.

Panicked people were seen rushing out of their houses.

However, there was no report of loss of life and property.

In October 2005, more than 40,000 people died after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Kashmir Valley.
