Afghanistan attack: Modi speaks to envoy
"I condemn the attack on our consulate in Herat, Afghanistan. Closely monitoring the situation. I have spoken to the Ambassador as well," tweeted Modi.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin posted: "PM designate @narendramodi calls up #India's Amb in #Afghanistan. Bolsters morale. Assures all support to brave staff at Consulate in Herat."
Modi also reportedly called up Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and thanked him for his support.
At least three gunmen on Friday attacked the Indian Consulate in Herat with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, said officials.
However, no diplomatic staff was injured in the attack that began at 3.25 am.
Security forces, including soldiers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), immediately cordoned off the area and a heavy bullet exchange started.
According to reports, two attackers were gunned down in the encounter.
Akbaruddin tweeted: "#India's Consulate in Herat, #Afghanistan attacked. Brave ITBP personnel and Afghan soldiers rebut attackers. All safe. Operation underway."
"#India-#Afghanistan officials in touch on attack on India's Consulate in Herat. Foreign Secy Sujatha Singh monitoring situation. All safe," he posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
