All four occupants and a pedestrian killed as chartered plane crashes in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jun 28 (IBNS): All the four occupants and a pedestrian were killed and two others injured when a small chartered plane crashed in Mumbai suburb’s residential Ghatkopar West area on Thursday, media reports said.

Preliminary reports said the VT-UPZ, KING AIR C90 plane which took off from Juhu airstrip for a test flight, crashed at a construction site near the thickly populated Sarvodaya Nagar while attempting to land.

Those killed are the pilot, two aircraft maintenance engineers and a technician, besides a man on the ground, aviation regulator DGCA said in a statement. Their bodies were charred.

The 12-seater aircraft belonged to Mumbai's UY Aviation and was in service since August 1995.

The frightful incident took place at around 1.30 pm.

Images tweeted by ANI showed thick flames and black smoke following the crash.

Five fire tenders and disaster management teams were at the spot of the crash, reports quoted authorities as saying.

The parts of the plane showed a logo of Uttar Pradesh government. However, official sources have said that the UP government had sold the aircraft to a private company called UY Aviation in 2014.

A DGCA team was on its way to conduct a preliminary investigation into the crash.

In images on Twitter, flames and thick, black smoke was seen rising from the wreckage.

Rescue operations are underway.
