New Delhi/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday credited all his predecessors since Independence in 1947 for helping India achieve the heights it has reached today.

As he launched the website of Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya here, Modi said the heights the country has achieved was due to the leadership and vision of every Prime Minister who got the chance to serve the country.

The Prime Minister Sangrahalaya or Museum has also become a living reflection of the shared heritage of each government that served the country over the past seven decades, the Prime Minister said.

"This museum will become the source of inspiration for generations to come. Our youth will be able to witness the hardships each Prime Minister faced and how they overcame it all to lay the foundations of New India."

Modi said India was fortunate to have got most of its Prime Ministers from humble backgrounds.

"This showcases the power of our democracy that gives equal chance to every citizen despite their background.

"Coming from a poor family, reaching the post of Prime Minister, strengthens the faith in Indian democracy," he added.

Describing India as the mother of democracy, he said, "The great feature of India's democracy is that it has been constantly changing over time. In every age, in every generation, there have been efforts to further modernize and empower democracy."

"Every Prime Minister of the country has contributed to the goals of democracy. To remember the Prime Ministers of India is to know the journey of independent India."

Modi utilized the occasion to pay tributes to Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar on his birth anniversary on Thursday.

"The Constitution of which Babasaheb was the chief architect gave us the basis of the parliamentary system," he said.
