Ambedkar row: BJP slaps assault charge against Rahul Gandhi in parliament, Cong rebuts with counter-allegation

New Delhi/IBNS: In an escalation of the faceoff between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress over union home minister Amit Shah's Ambedkar remark row, two ruling party MPs were hospitalised with injuries after they were allegedly pushed by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in parliament on Thursday, media reports said.

The Opposition ramped up its protest on Thursday in parliament premises with even lawmakers climbing 'Makar Dwar' in a bizarre scene of political slugfest.

As per BJP's claims, two of its MPs- Mukesh Rajput and Pratap Sarangi- were injured after they were allegedly pushed by Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli.

Rajpur and Sarangi were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

Slamming the Congress, BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya said on X, "Yesterday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge threatened arson and violence. Today, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi left BJP MP Pratap Sarangi in blood.

"Dr Ambedkar’s seminal ‘Grammar of Anarchy’ speech had warned against this kind of violence in a democracy. Little would he have known that he would be proved prophetic, again."

In a counter-charge, Congress Rajya Sabha floor leader Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla claiming he and Rahul Gandhi were assaulted.

Kharge posted on X, "My letter to the Hon’ble @loksabhaspeaker urging to order an inquiry into the incident which is an assault not just on me personally, but also on the Leader of the Opposition."

Rahul claimed his entry into parliament was blocked by a few ruling party members leading to chaos.

He said, "I was trying to enter the Parliament. But BJP MPs were trying to stop me, pushing me and threatening me. This is Parliament and it is our right to go inside."

All about the Ambedkar row

Congress has put up an X post where Shah was heard saying in parliament, "It has become a fashion to take the name of Ambedkar. If they (Congress) had taken the name of God that many times, they would have been in heaven for the next seven lives."

Posting the clip, the Congress said, "Amit Shah has said something very disgusting. This shows that the BJP and RSS leaders have a lot of hatred for Baba Saheb Ambedkar. The hatred is such that they are even irritated by his name.

"These are the same people whose ancestors used to burn the effigies of Baba Saheb, who themselves used to talk about changing the constitution given by Baba Saheb. When the public taught them a lesson, now they have become irritated with those who take the name of Baba Saheb. Shameful! Amit Shah should apologize to the country for this."

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya posted on X alleging the Congress shared an edited video on social media to "spread lies".

In the video shared by Malviya, Shah was heard saying, "Why did Ambedkar resign from the first cabinet of the country? Ambedkar repeatedly said he was not happy with the treatment given to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, not in agreement with the government's foreign policy and Article 370. That is why he wanted to resign. He was assured but the promise was not fulfilled. So he resigned out of ignorance."

"B.C. Roy had written a letter to Pandit Nehru that what will happen if eminents like Rajaji and Ambedkar leave the cabinet? In response, Nehru-ji had said Rajaji's exit will cause a bit of loss but Ambedkar quitting won't weaken the cabinet," the BJP veteran said.

Congress distorted my statement, says Amit Shah

Shah has accused Congress of distorting his remarks on Ambedkar amid the huge uproar over the issue.

Addressing a press conference, the BJP strongman said on Wednesday, "My statement in the Rajya Sabha was distorted and misrepresented to the public."

"The Congress party has a tendency to distort statements and create unnecessary uproar," he said launching a scathing attack on the Congress.

Shah said: "They previously edited a statement made by PM Modi and made it public. During the elections, my statement was also edited using AI technology and broadcast across the country."

PM Modi defends Amit Shah

In an all-out attack on his archrival Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, "If the Congress and its rotten ecosystem think their malicious lies can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insult towards Dr. Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken!

"The people of India have seen time and again how one Party, led by one dynasty, has indulged in every possible dirty trick to obliterate the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and humiliate the SC/ST communities."

The PM, who is the BJP's de facto supreme leader, said in another post, "In Parliament, HM @AmitShah-Ji exposed the Congress’ dark history of insulting Dr. Ambedkar and ignoring the SC/ST Communities. They are clearly stung and stunned by the facts he presented, which is why they are now indulging in theatrics! Sadly, for them, people know the truth!"
