Ambika Soni refuses Punjab chief minister post after Amarinder Singh's resignation: Reports
New Delhi/IBNS: Senior Congress leader Ambika Soni has declined an offer to become the new chief minister of Punjab after Amarinder Singh resigned from the post on Saturday, media reports said.
Soni made it clear at the meeting that not having a Sikh as the Chief Minister has "ramifications", NDTV quoted sources as saying.
Soni declined the offer at a late-night meeting with her party colleague Rahul Gandhi, sources told the channel.
Punjab is likely to get a new chief minister on Sunday as the Congress called a meeting of its MLAs for the second time in recent days, media reports said.
This comes after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as the Punjab CM on Saturday after being asked by the party's central leadership.
After tendering his resignation to the governor, the Congress leader said he resigned as he was feeling "humiliated".
A meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) held on Saturday evening was attended by 78 out of 80 MLAs, who unanimously passed two resolutions - on thanking the outgoing chief minister Amarinder Singh, and the second asking party president Sonia Gandhi to choose his successor.
Singh resigned amid infighting with state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu.
