Amit Shah summoned by Kolkata court in a defamation case filed by Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee

Kolkata, Aug 29 (IBNS): A metropolitan magistrate court in Kolkata on Wednesday summoned BJP national president Amit Shah in connection with a defamation case filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) parliamentarian Abhishek Banerjee, reports said.

Amit Shah has been asked to appear before the eighth metropolitan magistrate at Bankshall Court in central Kolkata on Sept 28.

TMC MP from Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, Abhishek Banerjee, on Tuesday filed a defamation case at Bankshall Court against Amit Shah for his controversial statement about Banerjee.

Earlier on Aug 11, during a mass rally at Mayo Road in Kolkata's downtown Esplanade area, BJP president Amit Shah accused TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee of having strong connections with chit funds and syndicates.

Shah also alleged that 3.59 lakh crore rupees, which West Bengal government had received from the Centre for development projects in the state, was looted by 'syndicates' and Mamata Banerjee's 'nephew'.

Two days after the rally, Abhishek Banerjee on Aug 13 sent a legal notice to Amit Shah asking him to apologize unconditionally in next 72 hours for his controversial statement. 

As BJP leadership and party president Amit Shah avoided to apologize on the issue, Banerjee filed a defamation suit against Shah in the Kolkata court.

"A case of defamation under IPC section 500 was filed before the court of eighth magistrate against Amit Shah on Tuesday and after accepting the suit, the court has summoned BJP's national president on Sept 28," Abhishek Banerjee's counsel, Sanjay Basu, told IBNS.

However, BJP leadership has not react on the matter yet.
