Amit Shah's Kolkata rally: BJYM reapplies for police permission at alternative location

Kolkata, July 31 (IBNS): A day after Kolkata Police allegedly denied permission to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah's rally at Rani Rasmoni Road in Kolkata's downtown Esplanade area on Aug 11, BJP's youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) on Tuesday reapplied to the city police seeking permission to host the rally at an alternative location, reports said.

According to reports, BJYM has suggested five alternative places, including Victoria House, Dorrina Crossing, Metro Channel, Mayo Road or Shyambazar Five Point Crossing, to hold its mass meeting where Amit Shah will be present as the chief speaker.

"We have reapplied for permission to host the rally on August 11 and suggested five alternative locations for the mass gathering," a BJYM leader told IBNS.

"If police denied permission to the rally again, we will move to the Calcutta High Court," he added.

A senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS that they had received an application from BJYM for permission to a political rally.

"We are discussing the matter with our superior authority and will reply to the applicant after taking a decision," a city police official said.

Earlier on Monday, BJP leaders alleged that Kolkata Police denied permission for the rally at Rani Rasmoni Road as Congress had already been granted permission to hold its political event at the same location on Aug 11, though city police officials claimed that they had received no application from BJYM.

The 'mega' rally, where BJYM's national president Poonam Mahajan will also be present, was earlier scheduled to be held on Aug 3 and later postponed to Aug 11, party leaders said.
