Army, Navy pays tributes martyrs of first World War

Kolkata, Nov 10 (IBNS): Several commemorative events to pay homage to martyrs including Indian and Anglo-Indian soldiers and the Lascars or sailors from the undivided Bengal and Assam who lost their lives during the period of First World War (1914-1918), were held in various locations across Kolkata.

At the Cenotaph, famously known as memorial of "The Glorious Dead” near Maidan, representatives of the Indian Army and Indian Navy joined ranks with members of the British Deputy High Commission in Kolkata at a specially held 'Memorial Service' and laid wreaths to honour those who died fighting in the war.

A pipe band from the Fort William garrison battalion lent ceremonial air to the poignant event. Soulful buglers sounded the traditional 'Last Post' and 'The Rouse' just as it were played out elsewhere during all similar 'Remembrance Sunday' memorial events held around the world to mark the event.

In an unrelated event, meanwhile, a special tribute was also paid to Bengal's Lascars - 896 in all - who were not essentially sailors fighting the war but who lost their lives to the perils of war at sea. The Indian Navy's Symphonic Band Orchestra performed at the magnificently lit 'Lascar Memorial' at Hastings Sunday evening in their honour.

The naval orchestra will also perform at Prinsep Ghat on Wednesday, November 12, for the general public to attend. The event will commence at 5.45pm and is a free event coinciding with the Navy Week celebrations in the run up to Navy Day, on December 4.
