Assam flood situation marginally improves, central team to visit flood-hit districts

Guwahati: The overall flood situation in Assam has been gradually improving as flood water is receding in most of the districts.

However, the situation remained critical in Nagaon, Cachar and Morigaon district.

According to the reports of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 5.61 lakh people of 12 districts – Nagaon, Cachar, Morigaon, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Karbi Anglong West, Sonitpur are still affected in the deluge.

Nearly 3.68 lakh people are affected alone in central Assam’s Nagaon district while 1.50 lakh people affected in Cachar district and 41036 people in Morigaon district.

In last 24 hours, two persons died after drowned in flood waters in Nagaon district and with this, the total number of people losing their lives in this year’s floods and landslides has mounted to 30.

The ASDMA report stated 956 villages and 47139.12 hectares of cropland are still under water and 66839 people are lodged in 295 relief camps.

On the other hand, an Inter-Ministerial Central Team from Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday reached Guwahati and interacted with the State Revenue department and Assam State Disaster Management Authority officials.

One group of the team including the Team leader Ravinesh Kumar, FA, NDMA, Anjali Maurya, Assistant Director of Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, Adelbert Sungi, Regional Officer of Ministry of Road Transport and accompanied by P. Vijay Bhaskar Reddy, Joint Secretary and Joint CEO, ASDMA will visit flood-hit Cachar district on Friday and will visit Dima Hasao district on May 28.

The second group of IMCT including Jintu Das, Joint Director ofMinistry of Agriculture, Ajay Kumar Sinha, Superintendent Engineer of Ministry of Jal Shakti, Kailash Shankla, Under Secretary of Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India will visit the Darrang, Nagaon and Hojai districts on May 27 and May 28.
