Assam police to set up 9 CILs to counter cyber threats

Guwahati, Feb 5 (IBNS) : To counter the growing threat of cyber crime, Assam police has set up at least nine Cyber Investigation Labs (CILs) in the state.

Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay on Sunday said that, it has been decided to counter the cyber threat which was gradually increased in the state in recent time.

“These CILs will be set up in every range under Assam police and we have trained more police personnel in dealing with cyber threats and internet based policing,” Mukesh Sahay said.

The Assam DGP said that, the nine CILs will be set up in Silchar, Jorhat, Diphu, Tezpur, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Guwahati and CID.

“We have already started work to set up two CILs in initial stage and next would be set up in 2017-18,” Sahay said.

Apart from the CILs, Assam police also looking to set up a Mobile Forensic Lab (MFL) in Guwahati in the next financial year.

On the other hand, the Assam DGP said that, militancy activities are still running along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar border.

“Assam police and counterpart of Arunachal Pradesh and other security agencies have jointly launched counter insurgency operations against the militants along the bordering areas following the several militant attacks on security forces,” the Assam DGP said.

On the other hand, the top cops said in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scam that, investigation is going on and Assam police had already submitted its first charge sheet before the court.

Assam police had already arrested APSC’s former Chairman Rakesh Paul, two members Samedur Rahman, Basanta Doley, assistant examination comptroller of APSC and other two persons, who involved in the multi crore rupees scam.

The investigating team also seized several answer scripts from the house of Rakesh Paul’s wife and his brother owned printing press.

“The investigating team had interrogated several people, whose names came to light following seizure of answer scripts,” Sahay said.

The Assam DGP further said that, few people including Rakesh Paul’s brother are still absconding, but they will be arrested soon.

Meanwhile, Assam police DG Sahay appreciated the police team comprising by Guwahati city police and South Salmara police, who successfully recovered the child from the Assam-Meghalaya boder on Saturday, who was kidnapped from the Hatigaon area in Guwahati on Feb 3.

“The 15-month old child was kidnapped from Sundarban Nagar area in the city by Nur Mohammad, the tenant in the house of Manjur Alam Bhuyan, father of the child. The victim family received a ransom demand over phone of Rs 50 lakhs from a unknown person. Following the incident, a police team from Hatigaon police station was immediately dispatched to South Salmara. The joint police team of Guwahati commissionerate and South Salmara conducted raids in the probable hideouts of the accused kidnapper and also interrogated probable associates of the accused person. Further source information revealed the probable hiding place of accused near Assam-Meghalaya border near West Garo Hills district, which is nearer to Indo-Bangladesh border. The raids continued at probable locations of hideout throughout intervening night on February 3-4. On Saturday morning, the ransom demand came down to Rs 25 lakhs which further came down to Rs 50,000. Our effort continued to rescue the kidnapped child unhurt. Finally, the joint team successfully recovered the kidnapped child from the house of one Sakirul Islam, who works as a labourer in coal mine in Meghalaya, resident of Salibhui Kumargati. The child was kept confined inside a hole dug inside the house,” the Assam DGP said.

“Now we are launching operation to arrest the accused kidnapper and his associates, who had managed to flee from the area,” Sahay said.
