Assam: Seven persons die after consuming hooch
Guwahati, June 3 (IBNS): Seven people, including a woman, have died and several others are in serious condition after consuming spurious liquor in Assam’s Golaghat distinct in past 48 hours.
According to reports, the incident happened at Borpathar area in the Upper Assam district.
The victims are daily wage labourers.
They fell critically ill after consuming hooch and they were admitted at Sarupathar government hospital for treatment.
A victim, who was identified as Sarumai Tanti, presently treated at the government hospital, said she had consumed liquor on Friday and fell critically ill.
“I brought the liquor from a nearby shop and consumed it in my house. After consuming the liquor, I started complaining of stomach pain and vomiting,” Sarumai Tanti said.
In past 48 hours, seven persons, including a woman, have died after consuming the hooch purchased from a shop owned by Pintu Paul and Narayan Koch.
Meanwhile, Borpathar police arrested the person for their involvement in the manufacturing and selling of the spurious liquor.
Bhula Bora, Officer-in-Charge of Borpathar police station said police have already arrested the persons who are selling illicit liquor.
“During search operation we have recovered several bottles of illicit liquor from the shop. We will take appropriate action against them as per law,” the police officer said.
The deceased persons were identified as Chanu Das, Kanta Horijan, Dharani Devi, Dipak Dev, Prakash Koiri, Prabhu Kumar and Badhua Rajput.
