
Assam: Two cattle smugglers killed, four cops injured in Kokrajhar gunfight with suspected extremists
Kokrajhar/IBNS: Two cattle smugglers were killed and four police personnel injured in a gunfight between police and suspected extremists in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Monday night, police said.
Thube Prateek Vijay Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kokrajhar district said that the incident took place in the Gossaigaon area last night and two cattle smugglers who were in a police vehicle were killed in the gunfight between police and suspected extremists.
“When two arrested cattle smugglers were taken by the police party towards Jamaduar side, the police vehicle suddenly came under the ambush by suspected extremists near Jamaduar area near Gossaigaon on Monday night. The police personnel immediately got down from the vehicle, but the arrested accused could not get down and sustained bullet injuries. The firing between suspected extremists and police personnel lasted for about 10-12 minutes,” the police official said.
“The police party immediately evacuated the injured accused persons from the vehicle and sent them for treatment at Soraibil Public Health Centre. Four injured police personnel were also sent to the hospital. The remaining police party started a search in the nearby areas and recovered one AK 47 rifle with two magazines, 35 rounds of live ammunition and 28 rounds of fired empty cases from the area. Doctors declared two arrested cattle smugglers who were injured in the gunfight, brought dead,” the official said.
“Our search operation is on. We suspect that there were 8-10 members of the group who fired upon the police team,” Kokrajhar district SP said.
The deceased cattle smugglers were identified as Akbar Banjara and Salman Banjara and they were arrested in connection with a case against them eight months back
The police vehicle was also damaged in the firing incident.
