Badaun gangrape: Ram Vilas Paswan meets victims' family
Slamming Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Paswan told reporters, "Such a horrific incident took place and it has been days, yet neither the CM nor any of his ministers came here. Is he scared to face people's anger or is he trying to protect the culprits?"
"I will take up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi," said Paswan, who was accompanied by his son Chirag.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) women activists on Monday alleged that the Uttar Pradesh Police lathuicharged them and used water canons on them while they were protesting against the Badaun gangrape.
According to reports, BJP women protesters said they were marching towards UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's residence and office on Monday to demonstrate against the incident when they were stopped by the police who allegedly lathicharged them and used water canons to disperse them.
Earlier, Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday visited Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh and met the family members of the two Dalit, minor girls, who were allegedly gangraped and hanged to death here.
Addressing media after the meeting, she said ,"I met the family. They told me that they were being pressurised to accept the crime and also there was an attempt to save the culprits. I strongly condemn this."
Slamming the Samajwadi party (SP) government in the state, she said, "There is no law and order in the state. It has turned into an absolute jungle raj (reign of the forest) here."
She appealed to the Centre for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case.
Two Dalit minor sisters were allegedly gangraped and then hanged from a tree at Katra village in Badaun on May 27.
The cousin sisters, aged 14 and 15 respectively, were reportedly missing since May 27 night.
The victims' family alleged that the police refused to register a a First Information Report (FIR) into the incident.
Later, coming under pressure from angry locals who took to the streets demanding action against the culprits, the police registered an FIR against seven people, including two constables of Ushait police station.
Akhilesh Yadav on Friday said that the Badaun rape case will be sent to a fast track court.
