New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sent 2,600 kg of mangoes as a gift for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Samiul Quader, Bangladesh’s first secretary (political) of the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata, received the mangoes at the border and handed them over to Indian authorities.

The mangoes are a "memento of friendship" between the two countries, Deputy Commissioner of Benapole Customs House Anupam Chakma, was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, and chief ministers Mamata Banerjee, Biplab Kumar Deb, and Conrad Sangma of Bengal, Tripura, and Meghalaya respectively would also receive mangoes from Hasina.

“The Prime Minister (Hasina) is herself very fond of this variety of mango, which is not available in India,” a senior official of the Bangladesh prime minister office was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

“She is sending these tasty fruits to Indian leaders as a goodwill gesture; so please don’t bring international diplomacy into it,” the officer added.
