Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad gets bail

New Delhi/IBNS:  Delhi’s Tis Hazari court on Wednesday granted bail to Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad in connection with a case related to violence during Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 protests in Daryaganj area of the national capital, media reports said.

Slamming Delhi police for arresting Chandrashekhar Azad who was protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, the Tis Hazari court in Delhi on Tuesday asked the prosecutor whether Jama Masjid where the agitation was taking place is in Pakistan that protests can't take place.

Azad was arrested by Delhi Police after Bhim Army's protests against CAA had turned violent in Daryaganj last month.

Hearing Azad's bail plea, judge Kamini Lau said as quoted by India Today. "It is one's constitutional right to protest."

The judge said the Delhi Police are talking as if Jama Masjid is in Pakistan.

When the prosecutor said permission is needed to hold protests, the judge countered him saying as quoted by the media, "What permission? The Supreme Court has said repeated use of Section 144 is abuse. I have seen many people, many such cases, where protests happened even outside Parliament. Some of those people are now senior politicians, chief ministers ."

Azad was sent to judicial custody on Dec 21 by a Delhi court.

After the Bhim Army's march was stopped at India Gate, the protests had turned violent with the protesters setting vehicles on fire.
