Patna, June 21 (TheBiharPost/IBNS): A local court in Bihar on Wednesday convicted five Maoists in the 2002 murder of divisional forest office Sanjay Kumar Singh.

The quantum of punishment will be announced on July 5.

The court of district and sessions judge, Sasaram, Prabhunath Singh found the Maoists guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and under Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), court sources told the media.

The Maoists declared guilty in the case include Nirala Yadav, Nitish alias Birbal Yadav, Ram Bachan Yadav, Sudama Oraon and Lalan Singh Kharwar.

The victim had gone on patrolling in the forested areas of Rohtas district when the Maoists shot him dead in February 2002.

Initially, the investigation was carried out by the state police but it was ultimately handed over to the CBI on the directive of the Supreme Court, reports said.

Last month, the Munger district court had convicted five Maoists in the killing of two security forces and handed down death sentences to them.
