Bihar Speaker refutes Manjhi's allegation

Patna, Feb 21 (IBNS) Bihar Assembly Speaker Uday Narain Choudhary on Saturday described as 'baseless' the allegation regarding his partisan role made by outgoing Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.

"The allegation against me was baseless and far from the truth," Choudhary told reporters, a day after Manjhi resigned amid a high political drama in Bihar.

Manjhi stepped down ahead of a confidence vote in the state assembly that appeared necessary to prove his majority over the loyalists of Nitish Kumar, whose bid to come back as CM triggered divided the ruling Janata Dal (U).

He said he chose not to face the trust vote because of 'threat calls' to him and his followers.

On February 19, Manjhi had alleged that the speaker acted in a "partisan" manner in favour of  JD (U).

However, the speaker said Manjhi's allegation was aimed to defame him.

"It is unfortunate and painful," he said.

Choudhary said some some leaders have accused him and "targeted the glory of the legislature." But decisions of the Bihar Legislative Assembly was legal according to the constitution. .
