BJP president Amit Shah highlights 'achievements' of the Modi government in his maiden speech at the Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Feb 5 (IBNS): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah made his debut speech in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, according to media reports.

Shah highlighted the achievements of his party and said that BJP is the first government to come to power at the Centre in 30 years yet it formed the government with its allies.

He said that his party has done 'historic work', with '50 achievements in three years'.

He said the BJP government is for the poor and the weaker sections of society.

He highlighted how the Swachh Bharat Mission, unlike schemes of the previous governments, has built toilets for the people, especially women, who do not have to go out in the open any more to relieve themselves.

Shah said that his government acknowledged that 'employment and jobs are an area of concern' but he put the blame on the Opposition -- mainly the Congress -- and said, "It tells directly of the job you did. This is the result of the so-called work you have done," according to media reports.

"I want to ask the Congress what exactly they think they are doing? You say one thing in parliament, another in the state assemblies, and yet another In GST council meetings," said Shah during his speech.

In a retort to an earlier jibe by Congress at PM Modi when the latter had said that if a person sells 'pakodas' and takes home Rs 200 every evening, "will it be considered employment or not?" -- Shah said that it was better to sell pakodas than go jobless, according to media reports.

He said that the money from GST is being spent towards 'providing financial security to the soldier on the border, to the poor for their gas subsidy, towards electrifying homes of those who have never seen electricity in their homes'.

"It is my humble appeal to you all that the GST is going to take India forward leaps and bounds," said Shah in the Rajya Sabha.

He said that it was his government that turned One Rank One Penison (OROP) into a reality.

On a day the country is mourning the death of four Indian soldiers following a cease fire violation along the India-Pakistan border, Shah, in his maiden RS speech said that his government 'has given the armed forces the power it needs to stand up to threats'.

"After the surgical strikes, India showed to the world that after the United States and Israel, India is the only country that can go to any extent to protect its armed forces and its people. The world has taken notice and views India in a very different light today<" said Shah.

He spoke about his government's keenness to implement the Triple Talaq Bill.

In the morning, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned until two pm following protests by the  Opposition over various issues, according to media reports.
