BJP's Rajagopal gives the party its first seat in Kerala Assembly
Thiruvananthapuram, May 19 (IBNS) Veteran leader from Kerala and former Union minister O Rajagopal gave the BJP its first win in Kerala Assembly by winning the Nemom constituency in Thiruvananthapuram district, media reported.
According to Election Commission results, 86-year-old Rajagopal defeated outgoing CPI-M legislator V Sivankutty by over 8,000 votes.
In 2014, Rajagopal, who had contested the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat, was defeated by Shashi Tharoor of the Congress.
Prior to this, BJP had never won an Assembly or Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, according to local reports.
