New Delhi/IBNS: Former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Ashwani Kumar committed suicide at his Shimla Home on Wednesday night, police said. Kumar, 69, was also the former governor of Nagaland.

"Former Governor of Manipur and Nagaland, and Ex-CBI Director Ashwani Kumar found hanging at his residence in Shimla," Superintendent of Police, Shimla, Mohit Chawla said.

According to media reports, Kumar was in a state of depression for several weeks.

A team of police officers and another from Shimla's Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital have rushed to Kumar's residence where he was found dead.

According to media reports, a suicide note, written in English, has been recovered which said the ex-CBI director was overwhelmed by his life and had set out for next journey.

The authenticity of the note is being verified with the family, the police have said.

An IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Kumar served as DGP for the state between 2006 and 2008 before being appointed Director of the CBI for a two-year period.

Kumar was in charge of the probe agency when it investigated the high-profile Aarushi Talwar murder case.

He also served as Governor of Nagaland between 2013 and 2014.

During that period he briefly served as the Governor of Manipur as well.

He is survived by his wife and son.
