British diplomat apologises after calling Golden Temple a 'mosque'

London, Apr 25 (IBNS): A British diplomat has apologised after he called the Golden Temple a 'mosque' instead of a temple.

Triggering a controversy, Simon McDonald, permanent under-secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, had tweeted on Monday calling the temple as 'Golden Mosque'.

"At QBP in Chandigarh @SinghLions presented @DHCAndrewAyre with picture of HM The Queen at Golden Mosque in Amritsar in 1997, a permanent memento for Deputy High Commission’s wall @UKinIndia," he had tweeted.

The diplomat soon realised his mistake and apologised for his remark.

He said: "I was wrong: I am sorry. I should of course have said the Golden Temple or, better, Sri Harmandir Sahib."

The Golden Temple is considered as one of the most holiest places in Sikhism.

It is located in Amritsar.
