CAA protests: CU students block West Bengal Guv Jagdeep Dhankhar from attending convocation

Kolkata/IBNS: In another showdown between the students and West Bengal Governor Jadgeep Dhankhar on Tuesday, the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA)-National Register of Citizens (NRC)-National Population Register (NPR) protestors at Calcutta University (CU) blocked Dhankhar from entering the campus to attend the university's convocation ceremony at Nazrul Mancha here.

With "Go Back" slogans, Dhankhar's entry was blocked by the students.

After repeated requests from CU vice-chancellor Professor Sonali Chakrabarty Banarjee, the students allowed the convocation to begin but without Dhankhar who is also the Chancellor of the university.

Following the massive protests, Dhankhar left the campus paving way for the commencement of the convocation in which Nobel Laureate economist Abhijit Banerjee was conferred D.Litt.

Meeting with Banerjee, Dhankhar took a shot at the protestors saying in a tweet, "Had some memorable moments with Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee and his mother after wearing the robe for Convocation. The actions of those who created or stage managed unseemly spectacle would resonate for long in the ears of cultured people of WB."

Several protestors have accused Dhankhar of speaking in the language of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the CAA, NRC and NPR.

Last month, Dhankhar was denied an entry to the Jadavpur University campus by anti-CAA protestors to attend the university's convocation ceremony.
