Calcutta HC seeks report over deworming-camp incident in Bengal
Kolkata, Mar 11 (IBNS): The Calcutta High Court on Friday has sought reports from the West Bengal government over the recent deworming drive-failure incident in the state.
A day prior to the National Deworming Day (NDD), the West Bengal government held an event on Wednesday in 11 districts of the state, to provide deworming medicines to school children.
Nearly 80 lakh students of the districts were provided deworming medicines, as the government officials claimed.
Hundreds of schoolkids of four districts, including East Mindnapore, North and South 24 Parganas and Hooghly, fell sick, after having government-provided deworming tablet namely 'Albendazole' (It is a broad spectrum anthelmintic used for the treatment of a variety of parasitic worm infestations) and were admitted to several state-owned hospitals.
Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Manjula Chellur on Wednesday directed the Health and Education departments of state government to submit a detailed report regarding the incident by next 10 days.
The court asked the government to clear few things, including who gave direction to hold the event, which medicine was provided to them, composition of the medicines, batch number of the medicines, Manufacture (MFG) date and Expiry date of the medicines, in the report.
Chief Justice Chellur also asked to take action if the report is not submitted before the deadline.
