CBI to probe suicide of Thanjavur girl student: Supreme Court
New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Monday told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to continue probing into the suicide by a girl student at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu.
The student said in her dying declaration that she was tortured and pressurised to convert to Christianity by her Missionary School.
The Tamil Nadu Director General of Police had challenged the Madras High Court order directing a CBI probe into the suicide of Lavanya M, 17.
"The investigation ... as per HC order," a Supreme Court Bench said.
The Supreme Court asked the Tamil Nadu government not to make it a "prestige issue" by opposing the High Court order on a CBI probe and said the evidence collected by the Tamil Nadu Police should be handed over to the CBI.
"Issue notice returnable in four weeks. Counter affidavit... to be filed in two weeks and rejoinder, if any, within two weeks.
"In the meanwhile, investigation in terms of impugned order will continue," the bench said.
The Supreme Court issued notice after hearing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Tamil Nadu government against the order of the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) for transferring the investigation to the CBI in connection with the suicide by Lavanya, a Class 12 student.
A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna and also comprising Justice Bela M Trivedi heard the SLP filed by the Tamil Nadu government.
Earlier, Lavanya's father had filed a caveat anticipating the state's appeal before the Supreme Court.
Lavanya died by suicide on Jan 19, 2022 in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu by consuming pesticides.
