Centre considers adoption of common charging standard for phones & tabs

The government is exploring the adoption of a common charger for a variety of electronic devices and a meeting has been called to discuss the matter with mobile manufacturers and sector-specific organisations, media reports said.

The government is considering a shift from multiple chargers to reduce the burden on consumers besides preventing e-waste, said the reports.

Currently, India is flooded with a different types of chargers, most rendered useless when a user buys a new phone or tablet of different make or features.

European Union has already affected this change with the adoption of a USB-C port common charging standard for small electronic devices by 2024.

The aim is to introduce a common charger for portable electronic devices like phones and tablets.

The government is likely to push for such a change as the devices that don't have USB-C ports as required by the common charging standard in the EU may get dumped in India.
