Chandigarh/UNI: A fully-vaccinated 20-year-old young man who lives in Italy and came to visit his relatives in this city became Chandigarh's first person to be identified as being Omicron variant infected.

The youth tested positive for COVID-19 on December 1 and since then he has been in quarantine. His swab samples were sent to NCDC, New Delhi, for genome sequencing.

Seven of his family members tested negative but were also put in quarantine.

They were tested again on Sunday.

The traveler had taken the Pfizer vaccine in Italy and remains asymptomatic.

The Chandigarh health department meanwhile urged those eligible for vaccination to get themselves vaccinated as soon as possible and asked the public to adhere to COVID-19 protocols such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.
