Chennai receives record rainfall, flood situation feared
Chennai, May 18 (IBNS): Tamil Nadu's capital city of Chennai has witnessed record rains over the last 48 hours, media reports said.
The city is expected to receive more rains with a cyclonic alert been issued for parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh by the MET office even as latest reports said the winds bypassed the Indian coast and moved in the direction of Bangladesh.
The MET Office said this morning that the depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastwards at a speed of 10 kmph during past six hours, intensified into a deep depression and lay centred over west central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal at 0830 hrs IST of today near latitude 13.3º N and longitude 81.0 ºE, about 170 km south-southeast of Nellore.
Reports said Tamil Nadu has prepared itself to brace for a cyclone and the boats were kept ready by the National Disaster Response Force.
Tamil Nadu has been receiving heavy rains with Chennai recording 101 mm rainfall since Tuesday as people feared a flood like previous year as roads were water logged.
Fishermen have been warned against going to the sea.
