Chidambaram attacks central government over fuel price hike

New Delhi, May 23 (IBNS): Former Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Wednesday attacked the Narendra Modi government over the steady rise in fuel prices over the last 10 days in the country.

In a series of tweets, Chidambaram has hit out at the Centre stating the fuel price can be controlled if the union government wills.

Chidambaram tweeted, "Central government saves Rs 15 on every litre of petrol due to fall in crude oil prices. Central government puts additional tax of Rs 10 on every litre of petrol."

He said in a follow-up tweet, "Bonanza to central government is Rs 25 on every litre of petrol. This money rightfully belongs to the average consumer."

In the third tweet, Chidambaram said the central government will "cheat" people by reducing the fuel price by just one or two rupees per litre while more can be done.

"It is possible to cut upto Rs 25 per litre, but the government will not. They will cheat the people by cutting price by Rs 1 or 2 per litre of petrol" the tweet reads.

The fuel prices had risen for last ten days.

The petrol and diesel prices rose above 80 rupees per litre in Mumbai, the business capital of the country, on Tuesday.

The government is likely to call a meeting to find a solution to the price hike.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and Rajya Sabha MP, Amit Shah, on Tuesday ensured that the government will come up with a solution within two to three days.
