Commoner saves UP cop from mob attack during violent anti-CAA protests
Firozabad/IBNS: A policeman was rescued by an ordinary citizen when he came under the attack of a mob during anti-CAA protests in Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad on Dec 20.
Policeman Ajay Kumar was surrounded by a mob, who was thrashing him mercilessly with sticks and other objects, media reports said. Kumar sustained head injuries and he even thought he would not survive the attack.
“Mob surrounded me and started thrashing. I sustained injuries on my hand and head,” said Kumar. A thought crossed his mind that he would not survive.
“Hajji sahab came and rescued me. He came like an angel in my life. Had it not been for him, I would have been killed,” Kumar was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
It was when one Hajji Qadir came to his rescue. Qadir was reading namaz in a nearby mosque when he learned that a policeman had been surrounded by a mob
He decided to save Kumar.
“I was told a policeman has been surrounded by the mob. He was severely injured, I assured him that I will save him. I didn’t know his name at the time, what I did was for humanity,” HT quoted Qadir.
“He gave me water and his clothes and assured I will be safe. He took me to the police station later,” Kumar said.
Violent protests engulfed across Uttar Pradesh after the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) in Parliament. Protesters burnt vehicles, including buses in many places.
Policemen deployed to prevent violence had to face the wrath of the protesters in many places. In Uttar Pradesh, 263 police personnel were injured of which 57 personnel received firearm injuries while trying to contain violence during anti-CAA protests, Praveen Kumar, IG(Law&Order) told the media on Dec 21.
