Washington/IBNS: Heads of four nations-India, the United States, Australia and Japan-met for the first in-person summit of Quad grouping on Friday in Washington DC, where they discussed the key challenges faced by the world presently, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opening the address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked US President Joe Biden for hosting the Quad meeting.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga are also present at the meeting.

"Our four nations met for the first time after the 2004 Tsunami to help the Indo-Pacific region. Today, when the world is fighting against COVID-19 pandemic, we have come here once again as Quad for the welfare of humanity," PM Modi said.

The Indian Prime Minister said he was "confident that our participation in Quad will establish peace and prosperity in the world."

"Our Quad vaccine initiative will greatly help the Indo-Pacific countries," PM Modi added.

The Quad nations also stressed for a "free and open" Asia.

In his opening remarks, President Biden said the four democracies have come together to take on common challenges from Covid to climate.

"We know how to get things done and are up to the challenge," he said.

Australian PM Scott Morrison said, "The Quad is about demonstrating how democracies such as ours can get things done. There is no part of the world that is more dynamic than Indo-pacific at this time."

Earlier in the day, PM Modi met Joe Biden for bilateral talks where he said trade will be an important factor in India-US ties.

"Today’s bilateral summit is important. We are meeting at the start of the third decade of this century. Your leadership will certainly play an important role in how this decade is shaped. The seeds have been sown for an even stronger friendship between India and USA," said the Indian Prime Minister.
