Congress announces Siddaramaiah as Karnataka CM, DK Shivakumar his deputy

New Delhi/Bengaluru/IBNS: The Congress on Thursday declared Siddaramaiah as the next Karnataka Chief Minister and state president DK Shivakumar as the former's deputy, resolving the deadlock five days after the election results were announced.

The deadlock was created after both Siddaramaiah, who was at the helm of Karnataka in the past, and Congress crisis manager Shivakumar wanted to succeed now caretaker Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

"Consensus, unanimity and unity" have been considered by the top brass in making the choices, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala told India Today.

The Congress has shared a picture on social media where party president Mallikarjun Kharge was seen with both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.

The party's CLP meeting was called by Shivakumar at 7 pm on Thursday.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 12:30 pm on May 20.

In the May 10 elections, the Congress registered a comfortable victory over the mighty Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 135 out of 224 seats.

The BJP lagged behind with only 66 seats leaving the rest for JDS and Independents.
