Kolkata, Sept 3 (UNI): A meeting was called at Nabanna by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday in the aftermath of several houses either crashing or developing major cracks and their residents having to evacuate following water and mud leakage in the East-West Metro tunnel.

A core group headed by the chief secretary has been set up by the Chief Minister to deal with all issues.

The other members of the committee are the home secretary, police commissioner, Mayor, MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, representatives of the affected families and a few officers from Metro Railway.

Experts would be consulted to ensure that people do not have to face such a situation in future.

In all, people from 52 houses have been evacuated and would have to be given accommodation till their houses are rebuilt or repaired.

The Government would be helping the Metro Railway, the Chief Minister said.

In the meeting the chief minister, after speaking to all the stakeholders, announced several relief measures for the trouble-torn inhabitants of the locality.

Metro Railway will rebuild affected houses and shops, until then it will provide the affected inhabitants temporary residence in the building owned by Metro near Gem Cinema or arrange rented accommodation for them.

The business-owners affected will be compensated on a monthly basis.

Residents will be allowed to go back to the houses still intact to recover important documents, taking one person each from the KMC, police, Metro Railway and Disaster Management & Civil Defence Department.

CCTV cameras will be set up at and near evacuated houses to ensure no documents/items get stolen.

Those who have lost Aadhaar, Voter ID or ration cards, or certificates, have to get in touch with the government control room and/or police.

As a humanitarian gesture, affected families will be given Rs 5 lakh each immediately.
