Defeat of Kanhaiya Kumar sends out a message as Javed-Shabana-Swara fail to bail him out

| @indiablooms | May 24, 2019, at 11:50 am

Patna, May 24 (IBNS): The battle of  Begusarai, which was seen by many as the fight between the David and the Goliath, remained in Bharatiya Janata Party's favour as its firebrand leader Giriraj Singh defeated his opponent Kanhaiya Kumar to make his way to the Parliament. But this was no ordinary constituency with the liberal brigade of India throwing their weight behind the JNU student leader slapped with sedition charges and seen as one of the challengers of Modi rule.

From the venerated film industry duo of Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi to the glam quotient of Swara Bhaskar (according to a Swarajya story  whoever she campaigned for, lost), nothing could bail out Kanhaiya, battling the ghosts of the infamous JNU slogan of 2016, 'Bharat ke tukde tukde'.

This slogan was raised in 2016 at a gathering inside the campus organised in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU),  when Kanhaiya Kumar was its students' union president though he denied taking part in that slogan.

The results of the Lok Sabha polls was declared on Thursday and it was once again a Bharatiya Janata Party sweep with Narendra Modi- who was time and again flayed by Kanhaiya in uncharitable language- is now days away from taking oath as the Prime Minister of India for a second term.

Dashing Kumar's aspiration of becoming an MP for the first time in his political career, Singh defeated the young leader by over 4.22 lakh votes.

Begusarai in Bihar remained a seat which was closely watched by the nation as it saw a battle between a young Communist Party of India candidate and a Union Minister who is known for making controversial remarks.

A winner from Nawada constituency in 2014, Singh was unwilling to contest the polls from Begusarai initially.

Nawada seat, which was Singh's earlier constituency, was alloted to Ramvilas Paswan's LJP.

Singh's opponent Kumar rose to fame after after being booked in a sedition case while he was the president of the JNU students union. The entire episode made him a popular name across the country. It got him followers as well as a large number of haters. He became the darling of India's liberal faces opposed to the BJP.

Kumar, however, remained mostly ineffective, despite a strong campaign and even celebrities like Shabana Azmi and Swara Bhasker backing him. The former student leader only earned 2.68 lakh votes in his favour.

Clad in saree, Swara was seen campaigning for Kanhaiya ahead of the polls.

During her campaigning, she had coined the slogan “Jai Hind! Jai Bheem! Lal Salaam!”.

Meanwhile, Swara, reacted to social media trolls, following the defeat of most candidates she campaigned for during the polls, said: "Yes, because #LokSabhaEelctions2019 was all about. Who #SwaraBhasker campaigned for!!!! And btw guys it was 6 candidates.. At least get your facts right when you are gloating!"

She also wished PM Modi over the win but with a sting in it as she wrote :"Congrats 2 PM @narendramodi on a spectacular victory. As citizens of democracy v respect the outcome & wishes of the electorate. Hope he lives up 2 his promise of working for an inclusive India. He is the PM of India, all of India, including the India that didn’t vote for him."

However, it was her comment against BJP MP now and Malegaon blast accused Pragya Singh Thakur which drew most attention.

" Yayyyeeeee for New beginnings #India ! First time we are sending a terror accused to Parliament Woohoooo! How to gloat over #Pakistan now??!???
#LokSabhaElectionResults20," Swara tweeted.

Pragya defeated Congress leader Digvijaya Singh in Bhopal by a big margin.

Not only Swara, but even another Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi also endorsed and campaigned for the CPI candidate.

She had attacked Bharatiya Janata Party during her campaigning and was quoted as saying by the media: "BJP is trying to divide the votes of Hindus and Muslims and spread hatred. All the allegations against Kanhaiya Kumar are politically motivated. I urge the people to vote for Kanhaiya to save the Constitution."

She had said that associating Kanhaiya with the 'Tukde Tukde gang' was motivated.

Despite all the efforts, Kanhaiya, whose campaign also saw his supporters shouting “Jai Kanhaiya Lal ki, haathi ghoda palki" in favour of him and urging people to send him to the Parliament, failed and it was Giriraj Singh who destroyed his ambitions to make way to the Parliament.

In his last tweet, Kanhaiya said he will continue to fight for the people and their rights.
