Delhi Court asks Mandoli Jail authorities to hear jailed conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar on punishments

New Delhi: A Delhi High Court on Friday asked the authorities at Mandoli jail to provide alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar with a hearing regarding the punishment barring his canteen access for a period of 15 days, said a report in the media.

The Delhi government stated that a post-facto hearing will be granted to Sukesh Chandrashekhar concerning the second punishment he received, which involves the termination of his visitation and phone call privileges. The accused's counsel will be given a chance to speak, following which a new decision will be made in compliance with the law.

The counsel representing the Delhi government argued that there is a distinction between minor and major punishments according to the Delhi Prison Rules. Since the punishments given to Sukesh Chandrashekhar were for less than 30 days, they were considered minor, and there was no obligation to provide a show-cause notice.

In his plea, Sukesh Chandrashekhar stated that the punishment tickets will be effective from May 1 and will remain valid until May 15 and that the superintendent of Mandoli jail has given his approval for it.

The state counsel further informed the court that Sukesh Chandrashekhar has filed a plea in the Supreme Court requesting a transfer from Mandoli jail, which also addresses the punishment of being deprived of canteen facilities that were imposed on him.

Sukesh Chandrashekhar was charged with defrauding the spouses of former Ranbaxy promoters Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh of Rs 200 crore, and an FIR was filed against him by the Delhi Police. He is also being investigated for several other cases across the country.

Sukesh Chandrashekhar and his wife Leena Paulose, who are both accused in a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate, were arrested by the Delhi Police along with several others.

Police have also slapped the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case.
