Delhi in grip of deadly smog, public health emergency declared

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IBNS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said that his government is considering closing schools for a few days owing to the dangerous level of pollution in the national capital according to media reports on Tuesday.

Tweeted Kejriwal, "Considering high level of pollution, I have requested Sh Manish Sisodia, Education Minister, to consider closing schools for a few days."

Last year too, many schools had declared a holiday because of the smog.

A public health emergency was declared in New Delhi on Tuesday as a choking blanket of smog descended on the world's most polluted capital city, media reported.

The Indian Medical Association declared an "emergency" as the US embassy website said levels of the fine pollutants known as PM2.5 that are most harmful to health reached 703 - well over double the threshold of 300 that authorities class as hazardous, reported NDTV.

The Association has also asked the government to cancel the scheduled half-marathon in view of the pollution as the participants are likely to fall ill in the smog.

Meanwhile, the National Green Tribunal pulled up Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana governments as the national capital reeled under heavy smog, media reported.
