Didn't say Modi symbol of Indianness : Dwivedi
"Who has said Modi is a symbol of Indianness? Those are not my words," Dwivedi said barely an hour after Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken "condemned in the strongest words" his purported comment that Modi's victory in the general elections last year was "a victory of Indianness."
Dwivedi, also a party spokesperson and a Rajya Sabha member, was asked by his party yesterday to issue a clarification after a news website published an interview with him. The website also cited Dwivedi as saying that the election of Modi was the beginning of a "new era."
Dwivedi claimed that he was quoted out of context by the website saing the controversy over his comments was a "useless debate."
The development came barely a fortnight before the Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled to be held on February 7.
Condemning Dwivedi's comments, Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken, who leads the party in Delhi polls, said the party was clear on the meaning of 'Indianness' and "by no yardstick is Modi representative of Indianness."
