Donald Trump confirms announcement on new reciprocal tariffs tonight hours before talks with PM Modi

Washington DC/IBNS: US President Donald Trump is all set to make a major announcement on reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday, which also coincides with his bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that he would address a new conference on reciprocal tariffs at 1 PM on Wednesday claiming to "make America great again."

In an early morning post, he had said that of all the decisions he had taken during three weeks in office, this was going to be the "big" one.

The 'reciprocal tariffs' post was an echo from Wednesday, when he committed to orders that could open new fronts in a fast-growing trade war with other nations, including allies.

This means a majority of Trump and PM Modi's bilateral talks would also focus on import duties.

The US President has insisted that his 'reciprocal tariffs' system - essentially an 'eye for an eye' response to countries that have import duties on American products - is "the only fair way to trade".

Meanwhile, PM Modi began his US tour by meeting Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard calling her a "strong votary" of the friendship between the two countries.

Modi arrived in the US on Wednesday for a two-day visit, which is his first since Donald Trump returned to the White House after winning the November 5, 2024 Presidential elections.
