Don't speak against any religion: TMC warns Humayun Kabir over remarks against Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata/IBNS: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday warned its fiery party MLA Humayun Kabir asking him not to speak against any religion in view of the leader's controversial remark against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.

In response to Adhikari's "will throw out Muslim MLAs" remark, Kabir threatened to thrash the LoP if he didn't withdraw his remarks.

Kabir had said, "If Suvendu Adhikari doesn't withdraw his comment, we will thrash him. Let him come to Murshidabad, we will bury him there only."

"I won't spare anyone who insults my community. To me, the party comes after the community," the Bharatpur MLA had said.

Warning Kabir, the TMC's disciplinary committee has asked him to follow the party line and refrain from targeting any religion.

West Bengal parliamentary affairs minister and senior TMC leader, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, said as quoted by India Today, "We have explained to him that what he has said goes against the ideology of our party and also the directive of our party chief.

"As a Trinamool Congress MLA, he has to obey the party's directives. He has been asked not to say anything against any religion."

After the meeting with the disciplinary committee, Kabir said there is nothing to apologise for but he will follow the party line.

What did Suvendu Adhikari say?

Adhikari courted row by stating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will throw all elected Muslim MLAs of the TMC out of the legislative assembly after the saffron party wins the 2026 state elections.

Adhikari made the remark while calling the TMC government- led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee- "communal".

"This government and its police are communal. It's Muslim League 2. The Hindus of Bengal will uproot this government," he said.

The fiery TMC-turned BJP leader, who defeated Mamata in 2021 assembly elections from Nandigram, had said, "The Speaker is acting unconstitutionally and adamantly. Kejriwal had acted in a similar manner by throwing out Vijendra Gupta (out of Delhi assembly) and now the latter is the Speaker.

"We will defeat Biman Banerjee (Speaker) and Mamata Banerjee and throw all TMC's Muslim MLAs out of the assembly. We will dump them on the road."
