Drugs worth Rs 427 crore seized in Assam since May 2021 : Governor Prof Mukhi
Guwahati: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Monday said in the frontal attack on drugs which the Assam government had started in May 2021, more than 4000 people have been arrested and drugs of estimated value of Rs 427 crore seized across the state so far.
In his speech on the first day of the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the Assam Governor said that, since May 2021, 2363 cases related to drug have been registered in different police stations across the state.
"4052 persons have been arrested and drugs of estimated value of Rs 427 crore, including 72.2 kg of heroin, 19207 kg of ganja, 49 kg of Opium, approximately 1.90 lakh bottles of Codeine based cough syrup, 31 lakh tablets/capsules and 3.375 kg of Crystal Methamphetamine, were seized" Prof Jagdish Mukhi said in the speech.
The Assam Governor further said that to create mass awareness as well as to prevent pilferage of seized drugs, large scale of destruction of seized drugs was carried out of July 17 and 18 last year in Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Nagaon and Hojai district.
"To encourage members of law enforcement agencies to carry forward the drive against illicit drugs, Borsing Bey, a Home Guard personnel who was instrumental in seizure of drugs worth approximately Rs 12 crore, was appointed as a Constable in Assam Police," the Assam Governor said.
The budget session will continue till April 1 and state Finance minister Ajanta Neog will present the state budget for 2022-23 on March 16.
