EC rescinds poll notification for two seats in TN Assembly, a first for the country

Chennai, May 28 (IBNS) The Election Commission cancelled polling for the two remaining Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and said fresh notification will be issued in due course, according to media reports.

The Hindu quoted an official who said, "The Commission has decided to rescind the notification and conduct elections afresh in due course of time."

According to media reports, this is the first time that such a thing has happened the electoral history of India.

Polling in the Aravakurichi and Thanjavur were postponed after large amounts of unaccounted cash were recovered and there were complaints of bribing voters, media reported.

Governor of Tamil Nadu  K. Rosaiah had asked the EC to complete polling by June 1 but the EC has said that the governor should not have written to EC about the poll dates.

With the notifications cancelled, all election procedures have to completed afresh. 

Assembly polls were held in Tamil Nadu on 16 May which saw the AIADMK return to power for a second consecutive term.
